In this situation, there was already an existing figure in a review (Garrett et al., Cell 2010), but some of the aspects needed to be modified/removed. I separated the components of the figure into multiple layers with transparency, so that they could be easily modified in the future without graphics editing programs, simply by creating new layers in Microsoft PowerPoint.
